Program
The Art and Therapy Drama Institute’s (ADTI) goal is to enable its adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to discover and cultivate their unique talents, skills, and strengths, vital to their successful normalization as effective, contributing members of society. ADTI offers unique behavioral management therapy and the first-ever Therapeutic Noh Theater® program that complement the overall rehabilitative and therapeutic treatment of individuals. Many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities participate in ADTI's prevocational work program, which allows individuals to do a variety of jobs within the facility for bimonthly stipends. ADTI's day treatment program also includes traditional day treatment components that enhance all aspects of the active treatment process, encouraging indiiduals to obtain their optimal potential, self-worth, dignity and independence. For example, the Inspirational Choir and Moroccan Ensemble have been entered for nomination of a Grammy for 2005. ADTI prides itself in maintaining an aesthetically beautiful and therapeutic environment with beautiful antique furniture as well as individuals, staff and internationally acclaimed artists’ artwork. ADTI offers preventive behavioral intervention, social, nutritional, psychological, sign language, and medical services (including physical and speech). The popular fitness services are offered at the Moms Mabley Fitness Studio. ADTI also provides its individuals’ with the latest assistive technology. The community living and survival skills program offers individuals monetary stipends. There are hundreds of therapeutic hand puppets to be used in the treatment rooms in preparation for process theater puppet shows. In the Leonell Weaving, Quilting and Sewing Studio, one will marvel at the wide array of colorful fabrics, yarns and threads that are used to weave and quilt beautiful textile artwork. Poetry instruction is held in the Dr. Rita Arditi Library, which also houses books on numerous subjects ranging from therapeutic techniques to the arts and cultures of a multitude of countries and beautifully illustrated books to spark the imagination. In the Albert Einstein Burgundy Room, individuals work on interviewing, writing, photographing and laying out stories for the newsletter, ADTI Family Times. In the Constance Divito Ceramic Studio, hand-built masks are made for the performances as well as other creative ceramic art projects which are fired in an on-site kiln. The Art Therapy Studio provides the individuals with a multitude of media to inspire creativity and self-expression. The Sammy Davis, Jr. Music Studio offers music instruction utilizing multi-cultural musical instruments. The Inspirational Choir and Moroccan Ensemble rehearse bi-weekly and perform for visitors, peers and staff in the Walter Pritchard, Sr. Theater. The Therapeutic Noh Theater® sessions are rehearsed on the Keiko Komatsubara Noh Stage, where the Therapeutic Noh Theater® performances are also produced using international ethnic masks and glamorous costumes, music, chanting, and meditative movement and dance. FacilityADTI's Phoenix Day Treatment Center first opened its doors to individuals on April 27, 1992. Pegasus was opened in the late fall of 1996. Constructed inside what had been an abandoned bakery building, the colorful and warm facilities are designed to host over 150 adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Designed to provide a warm, therapeutic, and healing environment, ADTI is filled with bright colors, individual, staff and internationally-acclaimed artists artwork, and antique furniture from all over the world. IndividualsADTI is dedicated to honoring its individuals and providing them with the best possible treatment services. Individuals come to ADTI five days a week from around the city, bringing with them a broad range of physical, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive challenges. ADTI serves individuals ranging from ages 21 to 72. ADTI's individuals live in group homes, natural homes, foster homes, and supervised apartments.
